Indonesia’s Coal Reserves Still at 31.95 Billion Tons

The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has recorded that Indonesia's coal reserves as of 2024 have reached 31.95 billion tons. This figure is stated in the 2025 National Mineral and Coal Resources and Reserves Balance Sheet.

"One of the energy sources owned by Indonesia that has long been utilized as capital for national development is coal," the data notes, as quoted on Tuesday (July 29, 2025).

Low-calorie coal accounts for the largest share of Indonesia's reserves, totaling 24.05 billion tons. Medium-calorie coal reserves are recorded at 4.54 billion tons, followed by high-calorie coal reserves at 3.35 billion tons.

Meanwhile, Indonesia's total coal resources are recorded at 97.96 billion tons. This figure consists of 67.33 billion tons of low-calorie coal, 15.52 billion tons of medium-calorie coal, and 15.1 billion tons of high-calorie coal.

These data are based on 1,656 locations spread across 23 provinces in Indonesia. This includes 59 PKP2B sites, 6 IUPK sites, 873 IUP sites, 562 former IUP sites, and 160 sites from PSDMBP investigations.

As of December 2024, Indonesia's coal production was recorded at 836.12 million tons.
