The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) highlighted the important role of strategic minerals in driving the success of Indonesia’s energy transition. Amid global dynamics, the mining sector is required not only to focus on production, but also on sustainability and value creation.

Herry Permana, Assistant Deputy for Mineral and Coal Development at the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, said mineral commodities hold a crucial position in supporting economic growth while also enabling the transition toward clean energy.

“Strategic minerals are one of the main drivers of Indonesia’s economic growth, and collaboration is the key to unlocking the various opportunities available,” he said at Indonesia Miner 2026, held in South Jakarta on Tuesday (May 5, 2026).

He assessed that the complexity of current challenges in the mining sector, ranging from global pressures to emissions reduction demands, requires industry players to become more adaptive. Therefore, the government is encouraging stronger cross-sector collaboration so the transformation toward a more sustainable industry can move faster.

In line with this, Indonesia Miner Managing Director Dimas Abdillah observed a shift in the industry’s approach, including the growing need for a more open collaborative space.

“This year, we are seeing not only an increase in participation, but also consistent support from companies and delegates who are returning to take part. This shows the importance of a platform to meet, exchange perspectives, and strengthen collaboration within the industry,” he said.

According to him, the industry’s current need is not limited to formal discussion forums, but also includes more fluid interaction spaces where the exchange of ideas and solutions can happen more naturally.

“We want to create a more seamless environment, because this is something the industry truly needs at the moment,” he said.

The government continues to push for the strengthening of Indonesia’s position in the global supply chain, particularly through the development of critical minerals that serve as the backbone of future energy. In addition, the application of technology and innovation in the mining sector is also considered important to improve efficiency while reducing environmental impacts.

“Strong collaboration will determine how we can optimize this potential in a sustainable manner,” Herry Permana added.
